Divvy is the bike share system of Chicago and Evanston. You can ride a classic pedal bike, an ebike or a scooter, pay per ride, buy a day pass or join for a year. Prices below were checked on Divvy’s website on Oct 15, 2026; the current rates took effect on March 11, 2026.

How it works

  • Pick a bike or scooter and scan its QR code with the Divvy or Lyft app to unlock it.
  • No smartphone? Single ride passes for classic bikes can be bought at select Divvy kiosks.
  • Return a classic bike to any open dock at a Divvy station. When the lock-in light turns green, your ride is over.
  • Divvy encourages all riders to wear a helmet. Obey traffic laws as you would on your own bike.

Divvy also advertises a $99/year limited-time annual rate for new members only. Members get free unlocks on classic bikes, ebikes and scooters. Always check the Divvy or Lyft app before a long ride, because it shows the rate that applies to your trip.

Divvy for Everyone

Divvy, the Chicago Department of Transportation and the City of Evanston offer a $5 annual membership to residents of Chicago and Evanston who receive SNAP, WIC, LIHEAP or public housing assistance. Members must be 16 or older and show proof of assistance. There is no annual commitment, and members also get a $10 credit toward unlocks. Out-of-station parking costs Divvy for Everyone members $1.10.

Docks, ebikes and lock-to parking

Classic bikes must go back to a docking station. Ebikes and scooters are more flexible:

  • Park for free at any Divvy station or at one of more than 600 public racks or posts shown in the app.
  • Parking at any other legal public location costs an extra $3.00 for non-members (single ride and day pass) or $2.00 for Divvy members.
  • Divvy says members may park ebikes and scooters next to a full station at no extra cost.
  • Never lock to a tree or private property, and never block a sidewalk, path or ramp.

Service area

Divvy covers much of Chicago and Evanston, with hundreds of stations and thousands of bikes and scooters. Metra notes that Divvy is available at Metra stations in the City of Chicago and neighboring municipalities. Use the Divvy app map to see live availability at each station, and plan the rest of your trip on our map or in the trip planner.

Bikes on CTA and Metra

Divvy bikes and scooters are not allowed on CTA buses or trains, or in the fare-paid areas of CTA stations. These rules apply to your own bike:

  • CTA ‘L’ trains: bikes are allowed on weekdays except during rush periods, 7–9 AM and 4–6 PM, and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. If you board before a rush period starts, you may finish your ride. Only two bikes per railcar.
  • The CTA may ask cyclists to wait for a less crowded train, and sometimes bans bikes on a line or the whole ‘L’ during heavy ridership. Check service status before you go.
  • Riders 14 and older may bring a bike on the CTA; 12- and 13-year-olds must be with an adult; children under 12 may not bring bikes.
  • Do not carry a bike through tall rotating gates (rotogates): it will get caught.
  • CTA buses: every bus has a front rack for two bikes. Crowding restrictions do not apply to bus racks, so the bus is a good backup when a train is full.
  • Folding bikes, including folding ebikes, are allowed inside CTA buses and trains at all times, if folded.
  • Metra: bikes, ebikes and scooters are allowed on all trains at no charge, first come, first served, in ADA priority areas or on cars with a bike logo. See our Metra guide for the details.
